DAR Founders Medal for Patriotism

The DAR Founders Medal for Patriotism honors people who displayed outstanding patriotism through faithful and meritorious service to the community, state, or nation.

“Pat Scannon exemplifies that distinction through his selfless devotion, searching for our nation’s MIAs and bringing closure to their families,” said Denise Doring VanBuren, President General of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Pat founded The BentProp Project in 1993 to bring American MIAs home for their recognition, closure for their families, and to pay a national debt of gratitude.

Pat stewarded the mission for 27 years as President of The BentProp Project. In that time, he developed a team of experts equally passionate about keeping America’s promise to bring MIAs home. Pat co-founded a partnership with the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. In 2018, he led The BentProp Project across a new threshold and officially changed its name to Project Recover.

Since its beginnings as The BentProp Project, Project Recover has completed more than 60+ missions in 20+ countries and territories worldwide, locating and documenting  60+ aircraft associated with 200+ MIAs. Project Recover has contributed to 15 MIA repatriations and 100+ MIAs awaiting repatriation.

The DAR Founders Medal for Patriotism is awarded to those who display outstanding patriotism in the promotion of our American ideals,

“Dr. Scannon’s work represents the best of the American spirit by repaying our debt to those who paid the ultimate price in protecting our shared liberties. Our National Society is honored to recognize Pat’s calling to ensure that the memory and valor of these service members are never forgotten,” Ms Van Buren said.
