2017 Annual Report: Full Circle

The 2017 Annual Report provides a summary of the Project Recover’s missions in five countries. The team explored 20 cases associated with nearly 100 MIAs. Those missions resulted in the discovery and/or full documentation of nine aircraft crashes associated with at least 36 MIAs.

  • The first Project Recover cases to come full circle – from discovery to documentation to family notification – were announced in the summer of 2017.
  • In March 2014, Project Recover located the underwater wreck of an F6F Hellcat piloted by Lt. William Q. Punnell who was MIA. During the same mission, Project Recover located the TBM Avenger associated with missing service members including ARM2c Albert P. Rybarczyk and AOM2c Ora H. Sharninghouse, Jr.
  • After the Department of POW/MIA Accounting Agency recovered, repatriated, and identified the remains, each of the three service members was accounted for during the summer of 2017.
  • In December 2017, Project Recover was honored to attend the funeral of ARM2c Albert ‘Bud’ Rybarczyk in Stevensville, Michigan.
